New Kids Activity Sheets Developed by Nikki Craig for Crisp Point

We are please to announce that after much hard work and dedication, Nikki Craig has developed some Crisp Point themed activity sheets that kids can work on during those rainy days at the campground or perhaps on that boring I-75 ride.

The sheets feature a picture of the Crisp Point Lighthouse that can be colored, a word search, lighthouse anatomy activity, a crossword puzzle, a “draw me” activity, and a fill in the blank.  Each of the six sheets can be printed out on a standard 8.5″ x 11″ piece of paper.  Each file below contains two pages. 2019 CPLHS Conference — Different Location, New Place, but More Fun!!!!

The annual Crisp Point Light Historical Society Conference will be held on Saturday July 20, 2019 at the Pentland Township Hall; 15474 M-28, Newberry, MI 49868. Coffee, juice, and breakfast treats will be available starting at 9:00 am as well as Crisp Point merchandise, so please arrive early. At approximately 10:00 am “the party starts.”  This is the first time in CPLHS history that we have held the conference in Newberry.

There will be a $5.00 per person ($15.00 max. for members of an immediate family) fee to attend the conference to help cover the cost. If you would like to volunteer time to set up on Friday (July 19) please contact Shelley Guy by email at hdbluedevil@chartermi.net or call 616-994-3144. If you wish to help with the food, or help with lunch, please contact Terri Brockway by email at tabrockway@yahoo.com or call 517-546-5283. Please do not bring any food to the conference unless you have contacted Terri no later than 6/1/19. Breakfast foods are not needed.

As the conference begins, the Board of Directors will update you on recent happenings, upcoming activities, current accomplishments, and future goals. We will have a silent auction, 50/50 raffle, and guest speakers. If you have a story from your keeping duty or a special event or happening and would like to share your story, (Membership Moments or Lighthouse Laughs) please contact Shelley using the above information.

August 2020 Fundraising Cruise to Alaska

Crisp Point Light Historical Society is again partnering with Cruise Planners JBR to host a fundraising cruise for Crisp Point Lighthouse in August 2020.

Pampered Chef Fundraiser for Crisp Point Lighthouse

 

Hi everyone, one of our Historical Society Members and Independent Pampered Chef Consultant, Gina Moore, has offered to do an On-Line Party through Social Media to benefit the Crisp Point Light Historical Society and its restoration / maintenance efforts of the Crisp point Lighthouse.

The Online Party will run through February 6, 2019.  Gina will be donating 20% of sales to the Crisp Point Light Historical Society at the conclusion of the Fundraiser.  Hope everyone will at least review what Gina has to offer and if possible support Gina and donate to CPLHS at the same time.  Please help promote this Fundraiser by passing this along to your friends on Facebook and other social media.

2019 Crisp Point Volunteer Keeper Program

As this year winds down with only five more days that we will be open at Crisp Point, it’s time to start looking to 2019.

The 2019 Keepers Program will start taking reservations on November 1st this year. Any request received prior to Midnight on November 1st will be moved to the bottom of the requests made on November 1, 2018. You may request from one to five days.
There are some rules you will have to follow and some work requirements you will have to do on a daily basis (at least) but the rewards of being a Keeper Volunteer go beyond words with the enjoyment you get being a volunteer. You MUST be a member of the Crisp Point Light Historical Society in order to request to be a Keeper. You must also be a member in good standing at the time of being a keeper. (See http://www.crisppointlighthouse.org/member.html for membership info.)
Starting on November 1st, 2018 Jamie Rolfe, the CPLHS Vice President, will be taking over the Keepers Program. All reservation requests and any other questions regarding the Keepers Program will now go through Jamie. I will continue to monitor the Keepers Program behind the scenes, but please contact Jamie. If you contact me through phone or e-mail about the Keepers Program I will direct you to Jamie, so save your time and contact her first.

Over the next few months Jamie and I will be updating the Keepers Guidelines for 2019 which everyone who gets to act as Keepers in 2019 will receive a copy of through e-mail.  We will also be working on the 2019 Keepers Shirt Design and get the order forms out to you in plenty of time to receive your shirts before the 2019 season begins. In the past there have been a few that have to be reminded several times about the keeper’s shirt orders. This year we will send out the order form (via e-mail), give you 10 days to return it with payment, and that is it. We do not have the time or resources to continually remind you. If you are responsible enough to be the Keepers at Crisp Point then you should be responsible enough to handle this in a timely manner.

November 1st is just around the corner so start looking at your 2019 calendar now and make sure your Membership is up to date.  If you have membership questions you can contact Teri Beasley, the CPLHS Secretary and she can assist you.

For the 2019 Keeper season we plan on the first Keepers arriving on or before May 19th. Please keep in mind that we cannot predict the weather and Crisp Point may not be accessible due to snow. However we do everything we can to make sure we open on time. In 2019, the CPLHS Family Camping / Work weekend will be May 24 – 27. You may arrive the afternoon of the 23rd and stay until the morning of the 28th. The Keepers who sign up for the weekend will be required to make sure the Visitors Center is operated normally.

There are some plans to make some improvements to the Keepers Camping area so the cement pad may not be available for a short period after we open. We will keep the affected Keepers informed as needed.

Presentation: Crisp Point, More Than Just a Beacon of Light, by Neal & Lonnie Lockwood

Crisp Point, More Than Just a Beacon of Light, is a presentation that is part of the Michigan Lighthouse Festival and will feature the history and stories of Crisp Point Area including Bodi and Culhane Lakes by Neal & Lonnie Lockwood. Neal owned and operated Ashley Building Supply for 38 years. He was a Master Firefighter Instructor for 20 years. Past Master of Ashley Masonic Lodge #614. Past President of Pleasant Lake Lions Club.

Lonnie worked for the US Postal Service for 35 years. She is a retired Postmaster. Lonnie is Past Matron of the Order of Eastern Stars. They are both active in their church and community activities. They have been Host Campers at Culhane Lake for 5 years. The couple married in 1965. About every vacation was spent at Bodi Lake & Culhane Lake with side trips to Crisp Point. They have made some neat finds at Crisp Point that they will share at the presentation.

Neal’s first visit to Crisp Point was about 1958. He was camping with his parents at Bodi Lake. That was when they were introduced to Charlie Singleton. Charlie was one the one would introduced them to Crisp Point. Neal will share this story at the presentation.

Neal has always been interested in local history. He has read several books about the Lifesaving Service, shipwrecks, and the UP logging industry. You will receive some history about the Lifesaving Service at Crisp Point. Neal will paint a verbal picture of daily life of surfmen for you. He will explain the dangerous things the surfmen had to do in their rescue efforts. He will also go down some side roads with interesting tid-bits.

We hope to see you all at Crisp Point on August 4th & 5th at noon.

Kids Activity Pamphlet for the 2018 Michigan Lighthouse Festival

As many of you know, Crisp Point Lighthouse will be a part of the 2018 Michigan Lighthouse Festival that will be held August 3-5, 2018.  The participating lighthouses this year are Crisp Point, Whitefish Point, and Point Iroquois.  There is a Kids Activity Pamphlet which you can download and print out to take with you on your trip to see the lighthouses.  Click here to get yours!  The pamphlet includes a word search, a navigation activity, a crossword puzzle, and a fill in the blank activity.

Each of the lighthouses will have passport stamps, and there is a place in the Kids Activity Pamphlet where they can be stamped for each lighthouse.  Cut out the square on the top right of the first page of the pamphlet with your contact info filled in and leave it at the last lighthouse you visit or at the Michigan Lighthouse Festival booth at the Whitefish Township Community Center in Paradise. You will be placed in a prize drawing, to be held at a final meeting of the lighthouses! You do not need to be present to win. The Festival will contact the winner directly and post it on their Facebook page. You can also send a photograph of your entry to margeellenberger@yahoo.com by August 10, 2018.

Clare-Gladwin RESD Students Produce Candles for CPLHS

Some examples of candles made by the students at the Clare-Gladwin Area School.

This year Ms. Galliher’s classroom at the Clare-Gladwin Area School in Clare, Michigan started making Crisp Point candles for our Visitor Center Gift Shop at the lighthouse and for our fundraising page on our web site.  The Area School serves students in Clare and Gladwin counties who are eligible to receive services under the categories of moderate and severe cognitive impairments, severe multiple impairments, autism spectrum disorders and traumatic brain injuries.  Crisp Point Light Historical Society provides the wax, colors, scents, wick, a Crisp Point Light mold, and other supplies for the students to use in making these candles.  With the help of their teacher and paraprofessionals and under their supervision, the students were taught how to melt down the wax, add colors or scents if needed, place the wick in the mold, attach a metal wick holder at the bottom of the candle, pour the wax into the mold, and remove the candle once the wax has cooled.  We think the students are doing a great job making the candles and we appreciate their help!  Also, thank you to Jerald Moore and other volunteers that have been involved in making the candles for us in the past!

On March 16, 2018, Crisp Point Light Historical Society members Carl Jahn, Marcia Jahn, and Cameron Lovett gave a presentation to the students about Crisp Point Lighthouse that included why lighthouses were built and that many are being restored and preserved.  Students were given a Michigan Lighthouse Guide (which is also available for purchase on the fundraising page of our website) which is a map of all of the lighthouses in Michigan and information about them, a Crisp Point Light brochure, and other lighthouse handouts to take home.  The Jahns also brought with them miniature examples of the different types of Fresnel lighthouse lenses and other lighthouse related items for the students to view.

Students intently listen to CPLHS Member Carl Jahn speak about lighthouses. Carl was dressed in an authentic lighthouse keepers uniform.

Some questions asked by the students during the presentation were “How far away is Crisp Point Lighthouse?” and “How many lighthouses are there in Michigan?”.

THE CANDLEMAKING STEPS:

A student adds water to a heating unit to make a water bath for the wax.

A student adds wax to be melted.

A student stirs the wax while it is being heated to ensure uniform heating of the wax.

The wick is inserted into the candle mold.

The two halves of the mold are secured together.

The wick is cut from the roll prior to adding the melted wax into the mold.

A metal wick holder is added to the bottom of the candle. The holder is removed after the wax cools and reused for the next candle.

The melted wax is carefully poured into the mold.

The wax has to cool inside the mold.

The final trimming of the candle wick on the bottom of the candle.

The two halves of the mold are ready to be taken apart.

The two halves of the mold are taken apart and behold, an orange Crisp Point Light candle appears!

Crisp Point Web Site and Facebook Update

The Crisp Point Light Historical Society web site is a great place to get information about Crisp Point 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Some things we have on the web site are a brochure request form, a downloadable brochure (includes a map on the back), driving directions, history, volunteer keeper schedule and information on how to become a volunteer keeper, events schedule, information on how you can help Crisp Point, fundraiser items order form, newsletter archives, area lodging and restaurant information, photos, videos, related links, and much more! In January 2018, we were able to find a photo of Second Assistant Lighthouse Keeper Lloyd Robins. The photo also included his wife Gertrude and son Clarence. The Forest Hill Cemetery / Duluth Cemetery Association also shared a photo of his family’s grave marker with us. Both are now featured on our web site on Lloyd’s page at http://www.crisppointlighthouse.org/robins.html. We are hoping to get a photo of Lloyd’s grave marker in the spring when all the snow is gone. Some interesting facts we learned from researching about Lloyd this winter, are that his son Clarence ended up working for the US Coast Guard and became a lighthouse keeper. Apparently lighthouse keeping was contagious in the Robins family!

As many of you may know, we also have two Facebook pages. One is a group page (Crisp Point Light Historical Society at https://www.facebook.com/groups/crisppointlighthouse) and the other is a regular page (Crisp Point Lighthouse at https://www.facebook.com/crisppointlighthouse). As of 1/28/18, our group page had 2,380 members and our regular page had 2,720 follows and 2,763 likes. One recent change to Facebook Group Pages is the ability to ask three questions to people who are asking to become members of the group page. This is another tool for us to be able to pre-screen Facebook accounts before we allow people to become a member of our Facebook group page. Sometimes it can be difficult to know which are spam/bot accounts and which are real people. So if you haven’t become a member of our Facebook group page yet and you click on the button to join, please answer the three questions to help us know you are a real person. The questions are: 1) How did you hear about Crisp Point Light Historical Society? 2) Have you visited our web site at www.crisppointlighthouse.org? 3) Have you visited Crisp Point Lighthouse?
