It is tremendously gratifying to see what has happened since we visited the Lighthouse back in 1997 when we were bracing for those November gales! This page is a shining example of what is possible when the human spirit is coupled with positive action! Great job and congrats! We will see you at the next Great Lakes Lighthouse Festival in October....or before at the new Michigan Magazine Museum!

Tom & I first visited Crisp Point in 1996. We had a hard time finding it but it was worth it. We love the woods around that area. We next visited it the following summer and were very disappointed to see how much damage had been done to the buildings. Hope you have success in getting it declared a National Historical Site.

We first saw Crisp Point from our boat in July, 1996. We fell in love with it. We then ended up stranded in Little Lake. We finally made it to Crisp Point in July, 1998. We were saddened to hear the entrance building was destroyed. Your web site is fantastic!! We were so glad to see pictures of what it looked like with the house. We couldn't believe how much land had been destroyed by erosion. Thanks for this wonderful site! We visit it often. We look forward to returning to Crisp Point.

My Grandpa's, Charles Singleton, family used to run/live at Crisp Point. The Singletons are very well known in that area. I was so pleased to see pictures of the brick house. It was destroyed the year I was born, but growing up I never tired of the fabulous stories Grandpa told of Crisp Point. The preservation of the lighthouse would make Grandpa very proud. If you ever need any historical information on Crisp Point, my family and I would love to help you out. We all have cabins very close to Crisp Point and my Great Aunt still owns the property where everyone parks. To me, there is no place like "Up North" in the world.

We tried visiting Crisp Point Lighthouse in June of this year, but we got to within about a mile and a half and there was a large sand trap in the middle of the road. As our vehicle wasn't equipped with 4 wheel drive, disappointly we turned around. We would have walked in but the stable flies were horrible! Maybe next summer we can attempt another visit, hopefully the road will be in better shape. Love your home page, pictures are wonderful!

We just visited Crisp Point Lighthouse on August 4th. We tried to go there last summer. But could not get down CR412. Then last winter we read about the society trying to save the lighthouse. This summer we were sucessful in finding it. We got the Crisp Point brochure once we got to the lighthouse. Having it before going would have been much better. We finally did find one in Paradise at the bait shop. But we could not find any brochures at any of the other businesses in Paradise. I also just found driving instructions on this web site. But we now know how to get there. We will be back in Paradise in the beginning of Sept. of this year. We will definitely be going back, if the roads are OK. You need to advertise the plight of the lighthouse more. So many people who go to the falls could also visit and may help with the donations.

Like so many others, I believe that Crisp Point is an invaluable part of the Great Lakes Maritime History as well as the Upper Peninsula. That is why I became a member last year. The first time I saw it on a cold, rainy November day, not even the bleak weather could intrude upon the mood the abandoned beacon and surrounding area offers. It is a place where a person, retracing the footsteps of history in the sand, can imagine what it must have been like, all those years ago as a lighthouse keeper living among the beauty and desolation. I do have one question however...why would anyone suggest putting in restrooms and a parking lot? In preserving the lighthouse there should also be the desire to preserve the landscape as well. Doing otherwise, would only destroy the atmosphere of the isolation. When you include the modern into the past, it loses its uniqueness. I'm concerned that Crisp Point will become like so many other tourist attractions rather than an invaluable historical site. The realization that a place like Crisp Point still exists in our world of fast paced technology and increased lake shore development is a blessing. A place you can go where you are surrounded by nothing but miles of solitude. Once something as priceless as the spirit of Crisp Point Lighthouse is surrendered for the mere sake of convenience, it is forever lost.

Hello, I've really enjoyed your website and will visit often! I think you are doing great work with your efforts to save Crisp Point Lighthouse and I applaud you. Although I live in Texas, I grew up on Lake Ontario, and also lived on Lake Erie. I return each summer and not a day goes by, during the winter, that the lakes are not on my mind. I've only visited Lake Superior once about 15 years ago but was profoundly affected by her beauty and majesty...and man oh man the water was cold! I'm not rich but my wife and I will send a small donation when we can...and we will wish we could send more.

I am pleased to find a society whose interest is in lighthouse preservation. I have just become very interested in lighthouses; however, getting from website to website on your site is slow - in fact, I have never encountered a site that takes as long as yours does to go from place to place. AT any rate, hope to be able to visit you one day.

Webmaster's Response:
We are just one of many societies with an interest in preserving lighthouses. Visit our Links area to find other societies that may interest you. I'm sorry it took long for you to get from one thing to another on our site. You probably just visited the site at a peak time when Geocities is used the most. I've never noticed Geocities as being any slower than other sites. In fact, I've visited much slower sites. But, if it is slow, I can't complain about it since they give us this web space for free.

Looking forward to visiting the light this summer. Tried last '97, felt I was lost so I turned around. Met you at the convention in Alpena where you offered to let me and my father go up in the tower if we prearranged - hope we still can. Maybe circumstances will allow us to help some with the shoreline work. Best to you both!

I was very fortunate to be able to visit the Crisp Point Lighthouse this past summer. A very beautiful place! I especially enjoyed the remoteness, which helped me escape from the familiar noisy fast-paced world. Solitude. Thank you for your current and future efforts to save the Lighthouse! I would just like to suggest that future development plans should consider limited building to help save this "wilderness" experience (i.e. building food stands, etc.). Also, long-term plans should be implemented to help stabilize the beach. For example, planting native beach grasses, and/or encouraging to "tread lightly" (no motorized or non-motorized vehicles).

Cameron, Too many pictures. Some are redundant and do nothing to enhance a visit to the Crisp Point page. When you graduate and have some time you may want to edit those pictures. Otherwise very well written and it makes your point. Wonder why the Crisp Point buildings were demolished while the Whitefish and Sable buildings were left relatively intact? Must be the remoteness of Crisp Point that prompted the CG to demolish them.

Webmaster's Response:
Tom, thanks for the comments. I've removed three pictures for now, when I graduate I'll look them over again. I think of the picture area as an archive, so that may be part of the problem. There are probably a number of reasons why the Coast Guard demolished the buildings at Crisp Point and left buildings at other sites intact. One reason is that they did not believe the buildings were needed anymore and wanted to save on maintenance costs. Second, I have been told that the rubble from the demolished buildings was placed in front of the lighthouse, which probably saved the tower from being washed away. Over the years the rubble was washed away, which is why we had to place stone in front of the tower again. Crisp Point is also not located in as critical a location as Whitefish Point. Today most ships rely on high-tech navigational equipment and LORAN. However, not all boats have this equipment and even when they do, they can fail, just like the radars on the Edmund Fitzgerald did before it sank in 1975.

I have lived near lighthouses in the past. I grew up in Port Austin with Big Red. After I got a job and moved to Ontario the visits to the beacons have been few and far between. I am borrowing my son-in-law's computer and the thought of being able to visit some lighthouses was delightful. I am visiting any I can find. Hey LRT, who is Wayne? You must have a grudge huh? Well thanks for sharing your thoughts.

Congratulations!!!!!! Nellie and Don
The stone wall is in!!!! Your dedication to the saving of this light is appreciated by all. The new stone wall has given this light a chance, with the two of you as the keepers we're sure to see great things in the future. To all who read this, give them a hand, help with the toughest job paying for the stone wall. Your membership or other donation will help pay it off. The story in The Keeper's Log winter 98 by Wayne Wheeler is WRONG -- this tower will SURVIVE the winter. All historical things can be saved for future generations!!!!!

Just thought I would comment on the lighthouse, and some trivia. On the night the Edmund Fitzgerald sank, my father was aboard the Earnest R. Breech, an ore carrier with the Ford Motor Company. That night, the captain of the Breech dropped anchor in a cove somewhere near Whitefish Bay I believe. My father remembered how awful a night it was, and spoke with the radio operator who heard a distress call from the Fitzgerald.
Just thought you would like to know this.

Waterfalls are cool, too. Last summer I drug my teenagers out to Au Sable Lighthouse and you would have thought I was making them eat glass. What a couple of slugs. Anyway, I loved it. I wanted to get to Crisp Point, but I lost the Honda in the woods near Deer Park. Aren't there bears out there? We stayed at the Deer Park Lodge with my college roommate Burt, and his family. His kids are even worse than mine, but they all joined together and found creative ways to torture the adults. We found the Honda and drove to Door County, Wis. Deer Park was great, in spite of the children, and Mike and Monica were wonderful hosts. Mike helped me drag the Honda out of the woods. I now have 4-wheel drive so we're thinking about going back up there, packing the kids in the back and dragging their sorry carcasses out to Crisp Point. I hope they don't knock down the lighthouse.

Webmaster's Response:
Yes, waterfalls are cool too. Tahquamenon Falls are one of my favorite stops while I'm visiting Crisp Point. If your kids are giving you a hard time, stop by the concession area at the Upper Falls of Tahquamenon for some ice cream...they have great waffle cones and I hear they're a lot better than eating glass! It is possible to find the Black Bear (Ursus americanus for the biologists out there) in the Upper Peninsula, although I have yet to see one at Crisp Point. An incomplete list of some other mammals you might find (and hopefully not hit with your car) in the Upper Peninsula are the Common Gray Fox (Urocyon cinereoargenteus), Red Fox (Vulpes vulpes), Gray Wolf (Canis lupus), Coyote (Canis latrans), Common Porcupine (Erethizon dorsatum), Moose (Alces alces), White-tailed Deer (Odocoileus virginianus), Bobcat (Lynx rufus), Canadian Lynx (Lynx canadensis), Striped Skunk (Mephitis mephitis), American Badger (Taxidea taxus), and Mink (Mustela vison). Like I said, this is not a complete listing. But, it might be the topic of a new area on the web site sometime soon. One last thing, the roads are being worked on near Crisp Point so hopefully it will be easier traveling. Feel free to give Don and Nellie Ross a call at 906-492-3206 if you're thinking about visiting the light. If they're available they can let you into the tower and you can go to the top!

Congrats on your progress. We just formed a 501(c)(3) to restore the South Fox Island and Point Betsie lights. Still in the process of getting the page up and running so it may not be there yet. Really like your site and would like to borrow a couple of ideas from you. Like the format for your membership application. If you have any words of wisdom for an upstart we would really appreciate if you have the time to E-Mail.
Best of luck,

My family and I were privileged to be able to visit the Crisp Point structure several summers ago. The trip has become something of a family tale, as we took the overland route, hiking several miles through the woods and mud. The aura and history of the light made it well worth while.

I read/printed off all areas of site/looked at all pictures and am willing to help. My wife and I are both are photographers but still have to work full time. We travel the states looking for the photo opportunities we can sell. We stumbled across Crisp Point in 1996 and have many great pictures that include the little shed that is now gone. We want to get involved more. We would like to be a part of working on the project of saving and restoring the Crisp Point Light. We might be able to come up in the spring if the roads are passable. We do not have a 4 wheel drive truck yet. I have many great ideas for saving the lighthouse.....
