Very interesting page and well done. My stepdad was the last lighthouse keeper at the Long Point lighthouse before it was automated a few years ago so I have a deep love of lighthouses and the great lakes (being I grew up on Lake Erie).

We were at Crisp Point Lighthouse in Aug 1997!!! Along with my parents (Jim & Sue Sumption mailto:thesumptions@juno.com) we collect Harbor Lights Lighthouses...My Wife, daughter (Stephanie age 4) took a two week vacation in August 1997 and visited approximately 12 lighthouses in the northern UP including Copper Harbor and of course Crisp Point. We, at the time we were there, were unaware of the situation of the lighthouse & did not know there was a lighthouse society! We have been coming to Paradise and camping at "The Rivermouth Unit" every year since we have been married (1989) and we visit the GL Shipwreck Museum and alway spend a ton of time at the SOO!!! I love to watch the big ships!!!

Thank you for your web site and you WILL hear from us in the future!!!

Dan Sumption
mailto:dsumption@argos.in.us

P.S. If you look at my web site...I am going to have a lighthouse page and would be most happy to put anything about Crisp Point on it that you would like!!!

Dan

I've been to the light twice. It is difficult to get to, but well worth the trip. My first visit was before the damage of last winter, and then I came back this past summer. You can see the difference in my pictures. I hope the light can be saved. It's my favorite.

We visited the lighthouse on Sept. 29, 1997 with Margaret Warren, our daughter, Mike Warren, and their two kids. They were staying in St. Ignace and wanted to see the lighthouse so they invited us and our 4-wheel drive so they could get back to it. Our son, John, had been there earlier and warned us the road wasn't too good.

We have seen a couple lighthouses before but now are getting more interested because of the plight of Crisp Point. We hope the lighthouse can be saved.

I am going to show this site to my husband. His grandfather was lost in this shipwreck:

During the heavy gale of November 5-6 on Lake Superior, the wooden lumber barge John L. Crane broke away without warning from the steamer Herman H. Hettler, which was towing her, and plunged to the bottom off Crisp Point, where many other lumber carriers have met their fate. The entire crew of six seamen and one woman perished.

I found out about the condition of Crisp Point in the August Issue on Lighthouse Digest. In addition to sending money, I would like to do some pen and ink or charcoal drawings of the lighthouse for the Society for auctioning or selling with all proceeds to the preservation. However, I need to locate some photos (black and white preferably) to work from. As you can see from the informaton about me I live in Georgia and cannot visit the lighthouse in person. Please advise of any Internet sites or books that I can purchase to find photos of Crisp Point. Thanks and looking forward to helping!

It is a good feeling to see people getting interested in trying to save a part of your maritime history. We are finding out now just how big of a role they played in the development of our great country. My wife, Sharon, and I found the lighthouse in 1993 and would not miss a visit at least once a year to such a beautiful place. I am looking forward to help saving the lighthouse and sending pictures to the web page for help in it's construction. I see that my step-son, Chad Lazette, has signed in on the book. I knew that when we took him up to the lighthouse in August of this year, he would fall in love with it just like we did. Good luck and keep up the good work.

It is a shame that it takes the people of a county to save a lighthouse. Our goverment should be trying to save all of our State treasures instead of the ones that directly effect the countys and states. Once these are gone they are gone, history lost.

I visited Crisp Point Lighthouse the end of Jul 97 with my wife, son, Mother, and Step-Father. My mother and Step-father had been there before and wanted to share it with us. We were home on leave from Okinawa, Japan where I am currently stationed in the USAF. I wish I had the resources needed to save such a wonderfully historical sight. Good Luck with your efforts. I'll be checking in to see how things are going. Sincerely, Chad Lazette
